North Korea Set to Launch Major Coastal Resort, Aiming to Revive Tourism Industry
North Korea is preparing to open a major coastal tourism project next week, aiming to mark a new chapter in its tourism sector as it prepares for a broader reopening to international travelers. The Wonsan-Kalma Coastal Tourist Zone, equipped with hotels and facilities capable of hosting nearly 20,000 visitors, offers beach access, sports facilities, recreational activities, and a range of dining options, according to reports from state media.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally inspected the resort and officially inaugurated it during a grand ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Tuesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Thursday. Kim praised the completion of the project as “one of this year’s most remarkable achievements” and described it as “a proud first milestone” in advancing the government’s vision for developing tourism, KCNA noted.
The Wonsan-Kalma Beach Resort stands as the largest tourism facility in North Korea. While the country will begin welcoming domestic tourists from July 1, KCNA did not specify when foreign tourists will be allowed. However, Russian officials confirmed later on Thursday that the first group of Russian tourists is expected to visit the resort in July.
Experts believe that the project likely demanded significant financial resources from North Korea’s constrained economy. To make the project sustainable, it will likely need to attract international visitors, particularly from neighboring China and other countries.
Kim has been focusing heavily on turning North Korea into a tourism destination to boost the struggling economy, with the Wonsan-Kalma development being one of his flagship initiatives. KCNA also stated that North Korea plans to establish additional major tourism projects in various regions of the country.
In a separate development, India has appointed a new ambassador to North Korea, signaling the restoration of full diplomatic ties after nearly four years without a resident envoy in Pyongyang. According to a statement released on Monday by India’s Ministry of External Affairs, Aliawati Longkumer, currently serving as the chargé d’affaires at the Indian Embassy in North Korea, will take over the role of ambassador.
