I remember a coworker of mine, grown ass man in his 50s or so, run out of work crying one day after the new manager apparently rudely told him about his stank. He tried everything. Was given a final warning and then found out he had diabetes- the cause of his smell. 15 yrs later He still has a bit o kick sometimes, but he's such a nice guy. And now he doesn't mind a friend politely telling him he needs to freshen up a bit. If anything, he asks US if he smells! But all cases are different. Moral: politely let yo ppl know

As someone who works in a shelter and works with people with pretty severe mental illnesses and/or addictions we have to have these conversations quite often.
The best way imo is to be honest and kind. "hey I don't say this to hurt your feelings and I have no ill will but I've noticed a smell from you and wanted to check in and make sure you're okay. Have you been able to shower or wash your clothes recently?". I feel like its harder when its a coworker tho đ

I was taking a medication once that made me have bad BO. And despite me showering wearing deodorant and perfume it was still bad. I got called into the office one day and they fired me. No notice or explanation. I was devastated. I ended up telling my doctor to change my mess, and it went away. But I always have a hygiene complex now

For me personally it's worse hearing it from a manager because then you know that the other employees have gone and talked about about you stinking as a group. I would rather hear it from a fellow co-worker one on one while I'm on shift like "ayyo you need to put some perfume or deodorant on" when you're working it's completely understandable that you're working up a sweat and need to put something on to smell good but talking about it behind their back and asking the manager to do it makes it seem like so much worse of a situation. We all have BO sometimes and letting each other know isn't a bad thing.

I would have told her... or him. Being empathetic and kind really helps take some of the awkward out of it. I'm not going to mention it to anyone else if I don't have to.
I know there are medical reasons... medications that'll jank a person up, but if you are on top of it, stay well groomed, you've done what you can. keep doing it and let us know you've been made aware and ...whatever. If it's just an unfortunate problem that there isn't much to be done... I say grin and bear it. Put some menthol or lavendar under your nose.

My niece inherited her bio dadâs intense body odor. Like sheâll shower and if sheâs been sweating, sheâll stank up a room within an hour. We had a hard time explaining it to her that we werenât trying to make fun of her, just that we want her to know. And trust me Iâd want to know if I stank and hope someone would say something. Weâve gotten to the point where we can joke about it now. But itâs hard for some girls to hear they stank.

My advice is to always give HR a heads up before having that difficult conversation. They might be able to coach you through it and if the employee gets upset and wants to file a complaint then HR will already have some back story .
When youâre ready , make sure you block more than enough time for this conversation and also ensure that youâre able to have this conversation in private . Keep some tissues handy too just incase . Ease into the conversation by letting that person know that you have a delicate matter to discuss and that it might be uncomfortable. Ease their fears by letting them know that this issue does not reflect on their performance what so ever but there is a noticeable odor that can be distracting and I need you to make sure that odor is not detectable while youâre at work .
Most people will have a mix of shock/ embarrassment/ humiliation and others might get angry / defensive . Just be ready for whatever might come . Some might ask for the rest of the day off . If you can approve that then do it . Just make sure to be clear on what the problem is and isnât and what your expectations are . Do not to say anything unnecessary in these situations . Dont make assumptions. Dont ask what it is. Dont make it about you.
Make sure you check in with that employee after a week.
Remember - youâre a manager and you need to be courageous enough to step up and not avoid it because itâs uncomfortable for everyone involved .

My dad can't smell because of parkinsons, but we didn't know why until last year. My whole life he's gone through phases of BO and bad breath. It taught me to never judge someone for their smell because NO ONE wants to smell like that so there MUST be a reason why. And that reason is none of my business. I just tolerate it.

You guys definitely handled it the right way. Of course no one knows how the manager handled that though. Hygiene is important in the workspace in order for everyone to perform at their best. We had someone fired for hygiene because people were complaining that he wore the same clothes everyday and farted wherever he went. Lol I had no idea, because I canât smell either. đ not being able to smell is not a reason to not take showers. I lost my sense of smell at a young age so I know what certain things smell ljke, but products I donât know. I take my family to the store and ask them what everything smells like. đ¤Ł

The ârightâ way wouldâve been, if one of the girls pulled her aside politely, and mentioned the smell. Not going to other ppl, behind her back, to have someone else tell her. Sheâs crying bc she realized for the problem to get to upper management, everyone mustâve been talking about it. And thatâs embarrassing
