Singing and speaking produce more aerosol particles than regular breathing and children's activities such as 1-1 teaching and choir practice have been significantly restricted indoors during the pandemic. However, the risk assessments have been based on measurements for adults, not children. Experts used a laser particle counter to compare aerosol emission rates of 15 children with 15 adults. When speaking, singing, shouting, and at rest, eight-to-ten year-olds emitted aerosols at a rate 4.3 times lower than adults. The authors of this paper hope this can be taken into account by schools and other venues.
