I've been thinking a lot about practice sessions and the stigma around not showcasing the vulnerability of the process. All singers make mistakes including singing out of key, missing the rhythm, not delivering the text convincingly, singing too harshly, etc. Well, I'm going to put myself out there and show the imperfections that happen during practice sessions because it is how we learn and perfect our craft. I truly wish more singers, especially those well-established in the industry, participated in this as it would teach us so much!

The name of the aria is "Una voce poco fa" from The Barber of Seville played by the character Rosina. The aria is divided into two parts: "Una voce poco fa" as part one and "io sono docile" as part two. The aria overall offers quite a bit of freedom to improvise and add one's own ornamentation. As a result, you will hear many different "versions" of this aria. Rosina is a coloratura soprano, meaning her role has lots of fast notes and movement. It was originally written for a contralto but shortly many mezzos played the role. Nowadays, you will also see many sopranos sing this role as well. I am learning this aria backward, therefore this clip is a practice session of "io sono docile." One of the hardest parts is the very first phrase, which the majority of singers sing incorrectly! The orchestra plays the first line of the aria just before the singer comes in. The quick notes are meant to begin just before the beat, but many singers start the quick notes on the beat. I am practicing getting this down accurately with a metronome playing in my headphones.

I am a lyric soprano, and it has been difficult to learn agility. It is something I have had to work very hard at and continue to do so regularly. I remember there was a point in my singing studies where I could not do ANY fast notes. It was devastating. But with practice comes improvement. I will often take coloratura roles and use their arias as practice sessions to better my agility.

I have about 15 minutes worth of footage that I will divide into several shorts. Here is part 1.

Please don't do that H aspiration - it's very breathy. Don't sing 'Io so-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-no docile' - just connect the notes - 'Io so-o-o-o-no' etc. You have a nice warm voice - don't make it sound weak!
