That’s a good point. Most of the guys you meet who have come through the worst combat you can imagine have either no spirituality and are destroyed by it, or the highest spirituality and character you can find in spite of it. Holocaust survivors, wwii, afghanistan—it’s true of all of them.
We think their experiences have made them that way and admire it and end up glamorizing it, but their actions have created that, and God honors it in them with His highest graces because it is the hardest place to practice right actions. Those who are destroyed by it are far commoner, in war and in life in general. God bless us all and grace our will to do the right thing with the eyes to see it as such when it stares back at us. 🙏
