It can be hard to separate yourself from what you’ve been through but healing is possible. This painting is less about the outcome and more about what is being deconstructed.

I am the adult child of an alcoholic who is healing the deep wounds caused by alcoholism through art. Maybe this will provoke you to join me.

Thank you for these videos. I’m 15 and currently struggling with my parents’ marriage crumbling because of my dad’s alcoholism. I am a lot like him in many ways, but I will not fall down this cycle of abuse. I don’t plan on having children because I want to be as cautious as possible, though any children I may meet I hope I can remember to treat well—not like how my father treats me and my two little brothers.

It’s really difficult to accept that my dad is, by definition, a bad person. He doesn’t do good things. He doesn’t care about this family, he only cares about himself. I am okay with some selfishness and needing to do things for yourself, but there comes a point where you do need to care about others. My dad doesn’t see that. I won’t be like him when I’m older, even without the alcoholism. I’m glad you’ve found a way to heal from your own experiences with your father’s alcoholism, and I do hope that I will eventually heal as well.

As a recovering alcoholic my art is very therapeutic in and of itself, even now approaching 15 years of sobriety.
