Just casually goes up to sixty three thousand feet because he can. Realizes that he has no adaptive technology to allow him to survive at that altitude. Descends calmly having claimed the altitude record for type for all time. Tells the story like he's retelling how he dodged a shopping cart to his wife. Now that's an airman.

He must have been getting tunnel vision, he couldn't have seen the curvature of the Earth. The Earth is flat.

I'M KIDDING!!!!!

My A-6 squadron had a pilot and BN make it to just over 58,000. They were bored and decided to see how high they could get.

Most fighters post Korean War can easily float up to 70-80,000 feet or much much higher.
It's not the jet that is limited, it's the fact if the canopy pops, the gasses in your blood fizzes out like a freshly opened Coke.
This will kill you as the bubbles instantly obstruct blood flow all over the body.

Go add a pressure suit to an F-22 and it'll probably reach 100,000 feet. But why the hell would anyone do this? Ultra high altitude flight hasn't been a viable defense since Gary Powers was shot down over the USSR.

Marine Aviator Gordon Keller told me a similar story about going to ~40k feet to buy time to get back to base with damaged aircraft. These old timers have some crazy stories. Wish I sat down with him & recorded some of them before he passed away.

I think he said at the beginning that God was with him. For in the Beginning God” . He actually saw the curvature of the earth.
