Kanye West believed he would be the biggest rapper in the world. That belief helped him become the biggest rapper in the world. But that same self-belief that helped him early in his career hurt him later in his career.

In this episode, I unpack the flaws with the human mind when it comes to our beliefs. We use Kanye as an example to support ideas that while a belief can be useful at certain points in our lives, it will unlikely remain useful for the entirety of our lives.

This episode will have you questioning everything you ever thought mattered. Check it out on my channel.

This take is very intriguing. His confidence has certainly acted as a double edged sword. I think the crucial distinction between then and now, though, is the presence of his mother in his life against her absence. She was consistently validating him and building him up his whole life while also grounding him. While we're all responsible for ourselves and our evolution, it's imperative that we have people in our lives that lift us up while also holding us accountable. Losing Donda has left a void in his life that has never been filled.

I did not expect the ending direction of this take. Most times it’s usually “they didn’t believe in me, but I made it”, only for Mark Manson to go keep going and you realize life doesn’t stop at happily ever after

Damn. But I have to respect the work he put in to achieve what he did. People criticized him, and he used that to fuel his drive.

That mindset is powerful, but the intention is what makes a difference. If his life weren’t centered around an ego, he wouldn’t feel the need to be the best, but he would still put in that effort confidently.

Everyone I know with bipolar is like this. They swing from god complex to delusion back to God complex cyclically

It usually happens when you forget where you came from and don't have a next bigger goal/purpose to pursue.

Its a strange parallel i know but if you watch the Coldplay documentary A Head Full of Dreams the lead singer Chris Martin is basically the same in that during their early days he's so confident that Coldplay is gonn a be the biggest band and they're gonna fill out stadiums and what not. Where it gets interesting is the fact that when he reached the pinnacle of success he got into spirituality particularly got very interested in Rumi and sufism which is the spiritual core of islam and went through this process of becoming more humble and grounded while still retaining that positivity.

Is it a kind of delusion? Or did it become delusional? I think I've observed this same paradox in a lot of "successful" people

the most revealing part of the documentary was at the end, where kanye was having a manic episode, and it made coodie so uncomfortable about filming it that he shut his camera off. this was the first and only time we see him do this. the documentary ends with a prayer to god, and celebrating His genius, and i wonder if he is also praying for ye, as that does seem to be the subtext.

Kanyes life is like a Shakespearean play. Poetic, and a cautionary tale.

Delusional self confidence is a double edged sword. The one thing he had in combination with that confidence is skill. The confidence helped him max out his skill ceiling.

I don't think I've ever seen a rapper that didn't claim to be the best in the world.

“He was one of those born clever enough at gaining a fortune, but incapable of keeping one, for the qualities and energies which lead a man to achieve the first are often the very cause of his ruin in the latter case.” To quote Barry Lyndon. It applies to Kanye I guess.

My favourite author talking about one of my favourite artists and Non-F Givers of all time?! This must be a dream! It’s sad to see how Kanye has been dealing with life recently, but I’m glad it didn’t stop you from acknowledging what he was good at that other people could take from him. Early on he was far less narcissistic, just a little egotistical but not in a serious way or anything like that.
