This video shows how an air-driven pneumatic or vacuum system powers a gyroscope inside an instrument used for IFR flight. Air spins the gyro, producing the gyroscope's rigidity in space. Rigidity in space is a key principle that is used in aviation in designing instruments for pilots to use when flying in the clouds without visual reference to the ground.

This video is part of a new series of #shorts I am making about aviation about bite-size aviation topics. I hope you enjoy them and would love other topic ideas!

Always remember that Laura, when you get right down to it, is just a pilot and a dispatcher. She is explaining facts from the source materials but may be incorrect or out of date. You should always follow your primary guidance (Aircraft manuals, government regulations, etc.) before listening to anything from this YouTube channel. The pendulous vanes are there to help stand up the gyro on start-up or if it tumbles. The gyro itself spinning is what keeps it upright.
