A French-Canadian family bought a Nez Perce girl from the Blackfoot Nation and brought her back to her Nez Perce people. Her name was Wat-ku-ese. "Lost and Found". She is later remembered for saving the lives of Lewis & Clarke.

I can feel my brain being rewired with the Neo-slavery and Indian removal videos. Thank you. Should have been done decades ago

Chief Joseph is a hero and a historical icon to many people, both Native Americans and whites.

There was a well received TV movie in the '70s about that, "I will fight no more forever". School teachers even showed it in social studies.

In Travels with Charlie in Search of America by John Steinbeck, he told the story of a friend of his who served in the expedition to capture the Nez Perce. According to Steinbeck, the Nez Perce would've won had they not had their women and children with them. The friend said it was the saddest assignment he was ever involved in.

Thank you so much for these shorts, as well as the full video, which I've watched twice already.
It all makes me feel so much more connected with history. It's especially making me think how truly course these events were to my life time - 1863 was less than 200 years ago, not all that far in the past in the grand scheme of things

These shorts are great, I let them replay until my AuDHD catches up.

I read about this, weirdly enough, as part of a rhetoric writing class I took in college. Chief Joseph's surrender speech is still so powerful over 150 years later, and it is astounding to remember that he was in his 30s during all of this. History is written by brave young people.

If things like this aren't still being taught in social studies (which used to mean history) then there needs to be a reevaluation. I remember being taught about the Trail of Tears and that was horrific but this was worse because they came so close to getting away. It broke my heart.

I attend university on Nez Perce land, University of Idaho. I know it's only tangentially related to this short but the way this institution upholds native culture and the dissemination of it is remarkable, there are Nez Perce language classes available, Nez Perce studies itself is a minor program, as is more broadly American Indian Studies, and there's a class (which I'm taking next semester!) which brings in elders from the local tribes and has them teach classes on Tribal history, and one of my department chairs is a really cool woman who is half Blackfoot. I wish more native cultures were given the same respect as the nez perce are here

I love that you're making shorts now. Useful for refreshing some of the information in your big videos. But as a french person "Nez perse" in English is stroke inducing 😄

I know it’s said and done now but we in Oregon pronounce it Wuh-Lao-Ugh. The second syllable sounds like “loud” but without the D.

The arrogance of “manifest destiny” of the early Americans is disheartening and the attitude is still latent on both sides of our 49th parallel border. As disgusting the slave trade was, the treatment of the First Nations is equally abhorrent. The conniving and trickery employed is beyond condoning. Our predecessors greed is compounded by our failure to reconcile.

Such a fan of your videos. This episode "they were just in the way" is compelling and factual. Thank you. I support Native Americans and their struggle. They were here first.

Bro you just gotta cut up old vids and sprinkle clips of them in the shorts section and use the community area to post. It’ll boost your engagement big time and we will help!

When I was in school, I would say that I hated history. The reality was that the quality and content of my history education was lack luster, and that the evaluation of my understanding reduced the work down to blatant memorization. The more time I spend going to museums and seeing content like this, the more I realize history is a story, a connected through line with an infinite number of sub plots.

Thank you for making this content, internet history man
