The reason I didn't use a larger drill bit is to avoid damaging the original. The router bit is .187" and the holes are .235". Using a bigger bit is certainly possible -- but for me, the risk of damaging the original is too high. I prefer to make smaller holes and enlarge them more safely. The risk of gouging the original workpiece on the drill press is too high for me -- and also with inadequate clearance on the router table, the router bit can kick back.

Making six small holes instead of one large one is a waste of time. I always take the cover off to replace strings when I have one of these, but don't have to when it has a large opening.
