Take a hit of history and learn about how the ancient roman had a thing for blondes. In this short we explore how the ancient romans came to have blonde envy after being exposed to the Germanic and Scandinavian tribes from the north After Julius Caesar's conquests.

Even the Ancient Romans had a thing for blondes. You see, The ancient Romans typically had dark brunette hair, and initially preferred it that way. Blonde hair was associated with the people of Gaul and Germanic tribes whom the Romans considered barbaric. Prostitutes were even required by law to be blondes. It wasn’t until Rome conquered the Northern Europe countries in 1st century BC, that the cultures mixed and light colored hair became fashionable. Noblewoman began wearing wigs made of the natural blonde hair of Germanic and Scandinavian people and blonde hair quickly became a lasting fashion trend. Roman women, and some men, would soak their hair in a concoction of bleaching agents and dyes made of goat fat, beechwood ashes, plants and nuts and soak in the sun to lighten their hair. Wealthier people even sprinkled actual gold dust on their hair to create a blonde look.

While blonde was fashionable, gray hair was not, so aging Romans also used a variety of methods to darken their once-raven locks. One popular recipe used a mixture made from ashes, boiled walnut shells, and earthworms. Another involved fermenting leeches for two months in a lead vessel, grinding them into a paste, and working the mixture into the hair.

Unfortunately, some dyes and bleaches caused such severe damage to the hair that people resorted to wearing wigs thus creating a whole market for wigs.

It’s interesting that when you ask AI for a blonde woman, the first image we are shown is a Marilyn Monroe type image. Funny considering she wasn’t a real blonde as I recall.
