Juan-Manuel Alonso (1952-2024) was a fashion designer, a painter, a Cuban immigrant, and a devoted community-builder. When living with HIV made his fashion career no longer sustainable, he turned to painting. A resident of Palm Springs, he created “Art on the Streets,” an initiative that brings together local artists to promote cultural tourism in the Coachella Valley. He was also Artist in Residence for the Palm Springs Unified School District, where he mentored high school students, as well as teaching painting at a senior center and volunteering at the Desert AIDS Project. Juan-Manuel was a shining example of the generosity and creative spark of our queer and trans elders, and we mourn the loss. #RestInPower #WorldArtDay #QueerArtist #HIV
