You list immediate catalysts and sequence of events, some superfluous, other more significant ones omitted, but gloss over the core problem that Gorbachev was attempting to address…the system just plain didn’t work as advertised. The US played the famous oil card. Soviets didn't have sufficient cash for grain '89. The condition for getting grain was taking down the Berlin wall. After that everything collapsed. Today Russia is the worlds largest exporter of grain. They learned that lesson.

As we all can see, it was a lot of things going on at once that doomed the Soviet Union, but frankly, it was even moreso. I personally consider Gorbachev a traitor too, the corruption problems could've been addressed with much less extreme and bizarrely abrupt policies and reforms, and the economic stability could have somewhat been prevented... But no, that wasn't enough for the ''nobel peace prize laureat genius gorbachev,'' apparently. Here in Georgia, we often make the joke that ''USA ran out of ways to defeat the soviet union, so it poured Coca Cola on it and just like their teeth it disintegrated.''
