“Roughly equivalent to the US Senate”? No, not at all. The US has far more power and can block though not originate money bills. They also approve executive appointments and appointments to the judiciary. Not to mention they have subpoena power and can compel testimony with an independent committee structure.

Whilst the house of lords cant block bills, there is an exception to this rule. Any law passed through the commons which intends to end democratic elections can be blocked by the house of lords
Edit: just to clarify the law states the lords can vetoe any law which would extend the lifetime of a parliament. I apologise for the mistake in wording.
