"Patience on a monument smiling at Grief," painted in the 1880's by John Roddam Spencer Stanhope

Small description on this painting 👇

This painting draws its inspiration from a famous line in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. In Act II, Scene IV, Viola, disguised as Cesario, speaks to Orsino about the quiet suffering of unspoken love:
“She never told her love,
But let concealment, like a worm i’ the bud,
Feed on her damask cheek: she pined in thought;
And with a green and yellow melancholy,
She sat like Patience on a monument,
Smiling at grief.”
In these lines, Viola is really speaking of herself as she loves Orsino but must keep silent, and the image Shakespeare gives us is of someone enduring immense sadness with dignity, still and calm like a carved figure on a tomb, while secretly consumed by grief.

Stanhope translates this metaphor into a striking Pre-Raphaelite vision. The central figure of Patience sits elevated on a monumental seat, serene yet sorrowful, while below her Grief appears collapsed and overwhelmed. The contrast captures Shakespeare’s paradox: outward composure masking inner suffering. This painting brings to life the quiet endurance of hidden pain that many have to go through daily. Just as Viola’s words express the heartbreak of love unspoken, the painting shows how grief can be endured with a kind of tragic grace, making sorrow feel monumental and strangely beautiful.

There an old arabic saying : love those who love you and forget those who forgot you and if someone can abandon you just like than then be sure you are capable of doing it too.

An exceptional combination of unforgettable poetry, gorgeous symbolical painting and fine music in this presentation. Yes, patience is always ironical, but once You befriend her, grief is easier to be transmuted 👽

Wow I’ve never related more having gone through a breakup this year and currently having eyes for a new person but not sure if I’m ready to pursue so I sit in silence longing and aching but taking pride in my grace and quiet restraint

I think this is a painting of a womans expression of overwhelming fear as she finds out she is pregnant bc it was much more pain without the epidural back then, so her friend is smiling bc she is happy to hear the news, but her friend is scared so she cowards down with fear. She has probably just told her the good news of life. I think the flower represents the life that is growing inside her.

I misread the caption and thought it said she smiled as her companion died. What a relief when I realized it was cried, not died...
