Astronomers used 300 billion points and 30000 CPUs created the largest simulation of the universe. The simulation “FLAMINGO” covers from the Big Bang to the present and spans over 10 billion light years. The universe has a few ‘cosmological parameters’ that determine its properties. Astronomers try to test different values of these parameters to see if they can explain what we observe. They are also the first to include normal matter such as gas and neutrinos in the simulation. They found that normal matter is essential to reproduce what we observe in the universe. We are still trying to understand how much matter there is in the universe and how it is distributed. But different measurements of the same thing seem to give different answers. The latest simulation shows that the difference still exists and remains a mystery yet to be resolved.
