EDIT: It's been confirmed that this is basically how the mechanic works, but they use Time Counters and a counter gets removed during your end step. There's a cycle of Mythic Impending creatures, one for each color.
If I had to guess, if you cast a card for its Impending cost, it enters the battlefield with a number of counters on it equal to the Impending value, and then loses a counter each upkeep (or maybe whenever an opponent casts a spell). As long as it has whatever kind of counter that the impending keyword uses, it isn't a creature. So Overlord of the Hauntwoods is either a 5 mana creature that makes a tapped rainbow land on etb and attack, or a 3 mana enchantment that makes a tapped rainbow land on etb and then eventually becomes a creature.

Impending was just revealed. If yiu cast a spell for it's impending cost, it gets that many time counters on it as it enters, and it isn't a creature until the last time counter is removed. Counters get removed on ende step.

I think Impending could also be an alternative casting cost, but it goes away after 4 turns. Kinda like Vanishing from back in the day.

If we get a cycle of the black card, I'm guessing white will be smothering tithe, blue will be either curiosity or rhystic study, depending on how far they wanna go, red will be either sneak attack or Aggravated Assault, and green will likely be doubling season.

This card and the red one are nuts in combo with bello because you bypass entirely the downside of using impending which now is an advantage since u cast em for less mana

Overlord is such a busted card for what roll it would fill. One of the issues i have when i play my landfall deck is that even though i have 19 basic lands in my deck, i eventually run out of targets. This is partly cause my deck is a landfall/ self mill hybrid, but also just cause harrow effects make you start tutoring for so many lands so quickly. Overlord is an interesting niche in these decks. Firstly, as a replacement for farhaven elf, you can have a 3 mana permenant that etb gets you a land (but overlord is actually generically better as it still leaves lands in deck, it just fabricates them). Secondly, this is a card that scales well late game, as rather than impending the overlord, its also fantastic to swing with. And third, if a game goes long enough that the overlord has the counters removed from it, its additional ramp/landfall triggers that a farhaven elf cannot provide. It does a ton of things all in 1 package, and im very excited to run it
