I think this is what the north remembers refers to. A deal was struck between torren and Aegon. Aegon told him about his dream of Ice and fire, torren confirmed it to be true. Aegon recollected about what he saw when he flew north of the wall. They realised their fears coincided and saw the big picture of their common enemy, the others aka white walkers. They therefore made a deal and torren bent the knee. Usually northerners don't shy away from a battle despite the odds and this is the only reason I see for them to turn away from a fight despite having a huge force of 45k.

I hate that Aegon would hide his dream of the white walker invasion and only tell his heir. If more people knew the wall would never lack the man power it needs and people wouldn’t think it’s some fairy tale wet nurses tell. And the future generations would take it more seriously especially because the last known Targaryen dream (the doom) came true

"No one knows why he surrendered" I would imagine it is because he saw that he was outnumbered and out-dragon'd, he also heard of the stories of how Aegon's dragons were capable of destroying Westeros mighty castles can defeat armies 5x their size on the field on fire. He prob surrendered cause he realised this wasn't a war he could win.

After the events of HOTD, I like to imagine that Torrhen knelt after him and Aegon met. They had a private conversation and somehow or another it was brought up that they both know about what's north of the wall. So a Stark king, who would've otherwise never knelt, knelt.

Torrhen Stark simply saw the writing on the wall, he knew that there was no chance of victory against Aegon and chose to swallow his own pride and bend the knee rather than command his men to die horrific deaths in vain.

I really want to see a tv show just on the starks because this is bit of a spoiler but in house of the dragon we find out every targaryen king passed down the aegons prophecy to the next until dance of the dragons where the morons forget their duty and destroyed each other i think house stark had some similar traditions but just like the targaryens for whatever reason it stopped and and the true purpose of their existence was lost and forgotten.
