So much heat gets wasted with the exhaust that it makes me think if a diesel generator powering a heater would be better.

Effiicient chimneys encapsulate the "exhaust" side and pump the air into the building/house.
You could try building a little box around the exhaust and pumping that air (but obviously not the exhaust into the building.

What would putting the air intake outside do? You would just have to heat up cold air for a diesel, right?
