If people cant say publicly what they would say privately, that's sad 😮

There's obviously a performative aspect to this, especially in/due to social media, but at the same time let's not fall into the trap of just dismissing the other side's arguments and beliefs. "They're just signaling and don't even believe anything." is a great way to either hand-wave away legitimate concerns or allow for disastrous policy choices to end up gaining traction.

This video may be using the same technique it explains.

There are also positive values to holding one’s tongue. Not sure what arena is being discussed here. We need to create clearer boundaries for places that people can hold dialogues without fear, but are taught also that vomiting untruths such as “I have a 1st amendment right to say whatever I want wherever I want” aren’t acceptable or correct in society.

Pressure to conform, it’s a powerful thing

But how did the speaker get his data? It comes from sampling, I guess. Do those who have publicly said something also take part in the survey or poll about what is privately said?

I wanna know the sources.
I have doubts about the claim that self silencing is higher today

I feel like everything we know about the first half of the 20th century was the cultural pressure to be the same as someone elsE

I remember a time where I was afraid to speak my mind and come out as an atheist. When people in school were laughed at and bullied for saying anything even suggesting they might be a little gay.

I‘ve never censored myself as an adult, and I won’t plan to, but to suggest we didn’t censor ourselves previously is laughable. Those affected just weren’t whining and complaining as loudly as they are today.

Defunding the police isn’t removing all funding from the police and shuttering the department. It’s using that pool of money to also hire other community support, like mental health outreach, so that specialists can handle special situations. It’s like SWAT, but for the non-military things police do.

The terrible name is ..well, it’s just a bad name.

Its almost like people don't want to lose their jobs over being politically incorrect. This is crooked.

I would argue the libs recognized the current model of policing isn’t working with and it seems to have an infinitive money Pitt without having any ability to truly fix or reduce rate of issues well at their core. So it’s just an addiction to the idea of certain saftey more than actual saftey. It also wasn’t a “100% black and white” get rid of police, but it’s not hard to see that a police force that has militarized over the years and even ramped up in many locations isn’t having the desired ROI from even just a budget financial perspective. Like reducing the police funding is different than 100% defunding. Though black and white takes center stage and ambiguity and solving things that lack clarity are always covered with a sort of bs Bull s attack on it from many directions to create confusion.

I'll tell you what I think on any subject, but I'm not going to go around shoving my opinions down the throats of those who don't want to hear them, as so many these days seem to love to do to me.

Defunding the Police IS the right answer, but most have no idea what it really means. Just like discussing “private property” or “free trade agreements” etc., it’s a lot different than what the headline indicates

One misunderstood comment can get you canceled today. Society would be better off if people just talked less and thought more.
