I prefer saying Auf Wiedersehn to Tchüss as I find it a LOT easier to say and sometimes umlauts can be so annoying in a word like Tschüss!!

Its not the formal version to say that.
Its more the common way.
The formal way could possibly be "es war mir eine freude sie kennen zu lernen und ich wünsche ihnen eine angenehme heimreise". Optional, mögen dich Sonne, Mond und Sterne begleiten.
Es gibt endlose andere formen in dieser schönen sprache etwas zum ausdruck zu bringen.

Every shopkeeper I meet says "Tschüß" or "Ciao" when I leave a store. Have rarely heard "Auf Wiedersehen" outside of very formal sounding telephone recordings or something like that.
