The daughter is not blowing it out of proportion at all I also have a name that his a common dog name and my mother has a common overall pet name. Neither of us has ever owned a part with our own name however we constantly get oh my dog’s name is …. too. Or oh I know a person who has a pet named …. as well. And it is so frustrating and annoying people need to stop naming animals human names cuz guess what if your dog gets loose and your calling a human name a lot of people won’t know if ur looking for an animal or a kid. My family always keeps the name of the animals we get unless they are human ones. I couldn’t even begin to imagine what it would feel like living with an animal with the same name as yourself. She is not over reacting. Op is under and over reacting, her brother is over reacting. Change the damn dog’s name. I hope OP’s wife goes out and gets two more pets and names them after Op and their son and see how they like it.

Changing a dogs name isn't like changing a humans name if it's in a shelter it likely has a different name then it's known it's whole life before the shelter same with those rescue shelters every dog that goes into the shelters or rescue shelters gets a name change this is done do owners who drop off their animals can't easily find and take back their animal it also distances the dog from any trauma associated with that name so they can have a restart. It's ultimately up to those parents to change or keep the name as they are the owners of that dog. A dog will very easily learn a new name no matter if it's a similar sounding or completely different name if you piggy back the name so like if they wanted to change the name to bell they would say Sadie Bell for a few days and give treats then bell Sadie and give treats then just bell and give treats then work away from treats this is why when people say their dogs name followed by good girl\boy or princess or what ever the dog will start to respond to good girl or princess like they would the name

I agree it's not that big of a deal but they should find an agreed nickname for the dog. My dog's name is Ryder but when he was 3ish we noticed that when he got frustrated or wanted something he would kick his feet and walk backward like a moon dance. So we started calling him Michael. He knows both of his names. Dogs are smarter than we give them credit for.

I mean I don’t think he should have picked another dog. Your dog picks you, it’s a soul connection is what I believe. However I think you’d be surprised how quickly a dog picks up a new name with practice. My dogs name was changed at almost two years old and it took her a few days. I know four is different but dogs are so smart but I also think the little girl needs to bond with the dog and maybe then she won’t care so much. No one is the AH here.

Imma be so for real dogs don’t actually k ow there names, I have a dog that we kept the og name but just cuz it pied off my dad a little we started calling him a different name and then a more fem name and the dog will normally reapond to any of them, though we rarely even use the two non names. Hell my parents have called him trouble maker a few times and he responded to that.

Kids can be extremely cruel. So once the school kids find out that the daughter and dog have the same name she will most likely be tortured. But really either OP will respect their daughter and rename the dog or give their daughter the option of legally changing their name. Because lets be honest it's not a big deal for them, but when children are hurt by their parents action or inaction it can fester until it becomes hate as a late teen, early adult.
