I'm Georgian. A lot of people misunderstand this conflict heavily, especially the foreigners. Whilst the territory was ''Stolen'' by Russia in 2008, it's been a breakaway defacto state since basically 1991, and when Georgia tried retaking it (by just walking in their capital which is just 10km away from the defacto border), Russia invaded, beat us and then recognized its sovereignity. They did not annex it.
And why does the woman stay in here? Well, obviously it's her home! Some more territory was annexed for good measure after the 2008 war, so a lot of people who were in Georgia suddenly got placed in this ''South Ossetia'' instead. It's not just grandma, it's a lot of other people too. And secondly, from time to time, the Ossetians and Russians slightly creep the border further, moving the border fence a couple metres at a time, trapping more people in the process.
It might seem funny for some commenters I've found, but imagine Canada slowly creeping upon like a small isolated US state that nobody helps, annexing more and more territories and putting your people and villages behind their border, and not even caring about them.
