"What do you sing?" Michael's voice echoed through the pearlescent clouds, a melody of curiosity tinged with a hint of melancholy.
Seirein perched nervously on the edge of a cloud, her gossamer wings brushing against the soft mist. As an understudy to the greatest siren of Heaven, she rarely got a chance to perform. "Anything you want," she replied, her voice barely a whisper.
Michael's gaze softened, the usual stoicism of the high angels cracking slightly. "Right," he said, gesturing towards a nearby, intricately carved chair sculpted from moonlight. "Get up on the chair."
Seirein hesitated, her heart pounding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. "Happy or sad?" she asked, a sliver of defiance peeking through her nervousness.
"Sad," Michael answered, his voice heavy.
Taking a deep breath, Seirein ascended the chair. Even here, in the eternal peace of Heaven, there was room for sadness. It was a different kind of sadness, though, a melancholic longing for something lost.
"Okay," she warned, her voice gaining strength, "but I warn you, I'll break your heart."
Even with the warning, Michael didn't flinch. "Already broken," he murmured, his gaze fixed on a distant point where stars shimmered like fallen tears.
Seirein began to sing. Her voice, a blend of ethereal beauty and haunting power, rose into the vastness of Heaven. It wasn't just the melody, though, it was the raw emotion woven into each note, a tapestry of longing, loss, and a bittersweet acceptance. The song wrapped around Michael, pulling at the frayed edges of his broken heart, weaving a story of love lost and a future yet unwritten.
As the last note faded, Seirein watched Michael, a single tear tracing a luminous path down his cheek. It wasn't a song of heartbreak, she realized, but a song of healing. A song that acknowledged the pain while offering a glimmer of hope for a new beginning, even in the face of loss.
Michael turned to her, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips. "Thank you," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "That was… beautiful."
Seirein felt a warmth bloom in her chest, a feeling of accomplishment that went beyond just singing. Maybe being an understudy wasn't so bad after all. Maybe she could use her siren song not just to lure, but to heal, to mend the broken hearts of Heaven, one song at a time.
