Super-heavy oxygen created but can’t overcome its neutron-rich instability

Scientists have created a very heavy version of oxygen called oxygen-28 (O-28), which has 12 extra neutrons packed into its nucleus. Scientists thought O-28 is unusually stable, but initial observations found the opposite. Studying them allows scientists to test their theories of nuclear structure and answer a longstanding question: can you hold a very neutron-rich nucleus with stability? The stability of atomic nuclei is determined by the number of protons and neutrons they contain. There are certain “magic numbers” of protons or neutrons that are much more stable than others. When neutrons and protons are arranged into complete shells, they give stronger binding energy. O28 was thought to be particularly stable as it has 20 neutrons and 8 protons, both are magic numbers. But we observed O-28 splits immediately, after it formed, our physics needs to be updated.
