Allowing your character to basically have all 20+ classes available also leads into great/funny narrative moments. Great stuff when the main scenario story points out that you have a class that would give you knowledge and experience to help in a situation, hilarious when you get into side quests and the number of NPCs that are completly belwidered that the Savior of the realm 6 times over has enough time to be doing shit like carpentry and botany chores on a daily basis with them.

I also love that during some parts of the Main story, if you have unlocked specific classes, they even acknowledge that! I adored the mention of me being a well renowned healer because I leveled White mage even though, at that moment, I was a Dancer! (I won't spoil the exact details, but this moment was in Endwalker)

I have not seen a playerbase more in love with their characters tbh. The amount of screenshots, fanfics, and commissioned art (both digital and traditional arts) the players have of their own characters is pretty insane for an MMO. Usually it's story characters or NPCs but in XIV the players love their WoLs a whole lot

Also worth mentioning that if you later have regrets about your character, what they look like, etc., you can get an in-game item called a Fantasia to re-do the character creation. So you have the best of both worlds, both keeping the same character between classes while still having some sense of flexibility with your in-game portrayal.

RuneScape did this first and admittedly it’s the main reason I invested over 3,000 hours in FF14 when I swapped between the two games initially. Aside from general growing pains FF14 has, this was an excellent swap when those pains went away. It’s nice building a character that isn’t going to go away as soon as a story has concluded.

You don't even need a new character if you want to replay the story. They implemented new game + for that, which is really awesome
