What if life is a spectrum of levels therefore can be defined only by it's opposite ( what it is not) and any of the proposed definitions captures a partial aspect. After all we (in theory) know where we are heading (the anthropic death of the universe).

There is no Definition of Life! As 'Life' is the Definer, Measurer, & Experiencer of All Possible Physical Properties & Phenomena! Life does not Arise from Physics but Physics Arises from Life(Ma'at)! Therefore Life(Will/Desire/Emotion i.e. Love) is the All-Creator, Essence & Foundations of All Things/Being and Beyond!

It’s perfectly reasonable to describe life in terms of what it does because we’re relying on a functional definition of what can be observed. It’s fine if other complex systems share some of these traits because all life is essentially complex systems. It’s not scientific to assume a priori that there is something more fundamental or essential. Some folks are still searching for a ghost in the machine.
