so it seems like that is keeping him from experiencing a normal rite of passage because his parents made a decision to be divorced - don't punish him over a situation that he had no say in. - outside looking in

His dad is right. That’s a selfish mother right there.

It’s not just a dance especially to kids. You only get four (unless you go to multiple a year like me) homecomings and it’s a life long memory for us. This mom (while I can understand where she’s coming from) should be able to give up ONE night. You’ll be in his life forever. He only gets four hocos

Talk to dad about switching weekends with dad, that way you still get your 4 days and he can enjoy homecoming

Yes. Kids will remember high school for the rest of their lives. It's his first high school dance. Plus, she doesn't have to go home after dropping him off. Take the other kids and go to a movie and dinner or something. She should let her kid get all the joy he can out of high school before he has to become an adult.

Homecoming is usually once a year. OP is absolutely the jerk here, especially to use the excuse of wanting to see her son more when she gets to a couple days a month (I get where she’s coming from but still...) compared to a popular dance that happens once a year. Yikes...

She would rather have a grumpy/irritated teen in her home then let them have a good dance with their friends.

Yes it’s wrong because you’re only thinking about yourself, this is once in a life time experience. Let him enjoy his time because when he’s older he will hold some grudge towards you, it’s just one Saturday that’s it deal with it, you’re a grown women and he’s a kid, I swear a lot of parents always think about themselves dude it’s messed up, open you’re eyes

This mom is being so incredibly selfish. I understand being frustrated at the little time you get but a part of the high school experience is the dances and she wants to take that away. I willingly decided to not go to my homecoming freshman year and then regretted it. Her son is going to hate her for making him miss out

Yes, you are the bad guy. You're being selfish, and your son will resent you. It will do more harm in the long run. My stepmom (one of the many anyway) tried to do something similar, and I loathed her.

YES!!! You’re being selfish, I get it, but this is homecoming! You can make it up next weekend, but you’re taking an opportunity away from your kid!

Bank the time & use it during a holiday.

Omg she is so in the wrong. It’s not the kids fault his parents got divorced. And it’s not just a dance. Its homecoming. Switch weekends for the month. It’s not that hard.
