I had a car accident in the late 1980s in which I was the only person involved. I went to sleep after working night shift. I ran off the road at about 35 miles an hours and dropped down about a 1.5 foot slope which broke the frame of the car. Of course that totaled it. I had just bought the car 8 months earlier fo 10,500 dollars. The insurance company paid out almost 9000 to me. I was very happy with that. 😊

I work for an insurance company (not on the claims side of things though) and I remember a guy we had recently hired from another carrier saying, "you guys are actually paying out these for claims?!" all bewildered as if that's not what our policy holders literally pay us to do. Really opened my eyes to why insurance is viewed the way it is, if others are denying claims for things that should be covered.

Insurance is really about the same as gambling in Las Vegas. Essentially, you are laying down a wager that says you won't screw up. They're taking that bet assuming that most of their clients won't screw up. The thing is they've got so many actuarial tables and statistics behind them that they know exactly what is going to happen.
They can't tell what's going to happen to you. But if you put you with 10,000 other people I guarantee you they can tell you almost to the person how many will end up costing them money. And like in Las Vegas, the house always wins

Not sure if you've seen this but State Farm is doing the same thing All State did. SF on homeowners is deny, deny, deny. And for roof claims, they're only covering the exact number of shingles that need replaced, not that whole slope like before. Imagine Hoa's freaking out with the mismatched (old/new) colors facing the street

Former State Farm employee here. I worked in homeowner claims, and one thing that was said in every unit meeting - every single one - was "We pay what we owe. Nothing more, nothing less." We had a reinspector in our district whose job it was to go around from office to office and reinspect claims that had been paid. He would pull a number of paid claim files for each claim rep, and go out to those houses, with an appointment, and remeasure everything and make sure that the claim rep's measurements were accurate. If the measurements were inaccurate and they hadn't paid enough, that reinspector had a checkbook with him and he would write a check on the spot to our insured to cover the difference. I don't remember ever hearing about State Farm going to the insured and saying "You were paid too much. You need to give us some back." The claim rep would be called into the team leader's office and fussed at for paying out too much, but I don't think we ever demanded the money back.

I worked temp for an insurance company's exec. Rule #1: reject every claim that even hints at being rejectable. Rule#2: continue to reject until they give up. It was disgusting! I fought a claim for 10 years. I'd win, they'd appeal. I'd win the appeal, they'd appeal again. This went on and on for 10 years. I finally won. Luckily I had a tenacious lawyer who refused to charge me.

In Florida you can accidentally only accidentally cause a fire in your house (cooking, equipment charging, etc) and even though you may have been negligent, they do 100% pay your claim. At least, Citizens does.
Also, the best thing that can happen for you is if you are assigned an independent insurance adjuster. They’re on your side as a customer. The higher their estimate, the more they get paid. Insurance companies are not 100% rotten. Geico is though. They will deny a claim because they can’t reach their insured who caused an accident. If that happens, only mention the words ‘escalate’ and ‘lawyer’.

Insurance companies have their best interest at heart. It just so happens that it can line up with yours if you really stretch it
