Ep 40 Unravelling the Secrets of Coral Reefs

Coral reefs support a vast diversity of life, including the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. As climate change continues to degrade these reef systems, it is becoming increasingly important to better understand the productivity of coral reefs and this is exactly what Renato’s research focuses on.
Renato and Pauline joined the D'Arros Research Centre for three weeks to conduct research on the reefs of D’Arros and St Joseph.
This involved the deployment of current meters and herbivore exclusion setups at various sites around the islands. These will help to determine the different sources of energy on the reefs. Surveys of the local reef fishes tell us about the sheer amount of life the different reefs support and photographic measurement will allow for the structure of the reefs to be analysed. This all translates to a lot of diving for the research team and a lot of very cool data.

This was Renato and Pauline’s second research trip to D’Arros. They will be back in years to come.
The isolated nature of D’Arros and St Joseph make the area an ideal study site for this kind of research and perhaps it will be here at D’Arros that we unravel the secrets of productivity on coral reefs.
