Under the previous short about my heavy-duty storage shelves (linked to this short), I read hundreds of comments urging me to throw all this junk away, and I agree that keeping scraps of material, broken tool parts, and other potential workpieces is economically impractical.
From an economic standpoint, it's better to throw away all the junk and free up space. However, not everything in my life is determined by economic practicality.

In this age of Throw-away you need to work against that. I started selective hoarding as a young man, and at 75 I am a master of reuse. Every time I construct or repair things I am reusing "junk". Be proud Advoko, you are a master maker.

I swear on jesus, every single time I FINALLY throw something away after not needing it for years, I immediately find a use for it

I agree with using leftovers on hand to build what you need instead of tossing it in the landfill and spending money to buy premade.

I love your philosophy. The money saved is a nice bonus, but the landfill saved (and not created) is brilliant, plus it exercises your mind and body.

My grandfather lived through the Great Depression. He was a school janitor by trade. I never saw him go to a hardware store for anything. He had coffee cans with screws, nails, fittings and everything else you can imagine. Whenever something stopped working, he figured it out and did everything to do to repair or otherwise improvise the fix. To some, this is a bit extreme. To me, I understood his life experiences, mindset and philosophy. In so many ways, I am a lot like my grandfather.

We all say reduce reuse recycle in that order for a reason. Reuse is more efficient than recycling, we should all aspire to reuse more than we recycle.

I had a massive argument with a past landlord, why do you have all this crap, just go to the hardware store when you need parts. My main argument, aside from environmental and reuse as a philosophy. Most hardware stores are not open at 3am. Which is usually when I have my best ideas. And having a pile of wood, metal, plastics allows things to just be made. Now I have my own house. And great gadgets constant being produced. Mostly made from what people like him would term 'rubbish. I would argue that is excellent economic principles. Happy tinkering my friend. '

New Zealand, being at the end of the earth and untill recently, months away from re supply. Every shed has boxes of bits and pieces. We call them gazing boxes. It is amazing what can be made or fixed from the ingredients. I think that is where kiwi ingenuity comes from.
