One of my favorite John Cazale scenes is in Goncharov after Joe’s clock starts working again and Joe realizes that his time is limited. There is this brief moment when Joe looks down at the watch as he wipes of his ice pick and you can see genuine pain through his projected confidence. Cazale gives us a brief glimpse into the soul of this man who we, through the perspective of Goncharov, have been conditioned to view as soulless. Without words he manages to paint this eerily beautiful picture of a man who has lost his mind but not his soul, and it is as disturbing as it is relieving. Even when confined to small roles Cazale elevated his movies like very few actors ever could.

If you haven’t seen The Deer Hunter…holy crap, put it on your MUST do list now. As hard core a movie as there ever was…and yet absolutely beautiful as well.

I don’t think there’s an actor out there that doesn’t hold John in the highest regard. As an audience member, you never watch him and think of acting. I suppose that’s what it’s all about.
