The farthest eastern extent of Alexander the Great’s empire was known in antiquity as Bactria. The territory initially went to Alexander’s general Selucis I Nicator, who founded the Selucid empire. His successor Antiochus II faced rebellion and warfare through much of his reign (261-246 BCE). One of Antiochus’ local governors, or satraps, was a man named Diodotus. He declared independence from Antiochus and started his own dynasty of Greco-Bactrian rulers. The dynasty was not long lived. Diodotus was succeeded by his son Diodotus II, who was overthrown by one of his own satraps named Euthydemus. It was this last man who would expand the kingdom from Bactria into the Indian subcontinent, covering much of the modern states of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and even expanding into the Punjab plain of northwest India. Indo-Greek kings continued to rule the area until the 1st century AD when the kingdom was destroyed and absorbed into the territory of its various neighbors. For most of its two centuries of life, the Greco-Indian state exported Greek art styles into the Buddhist tradition, with some Greek gods serving as models for Buddhist representations of bodhisattvas like Vajrapani.
