I was interested so looked up the full study. As this compared the provided vegan diet to whatever commercially available meat based diet was fed before, there is no standardisation in the comparator. Would be nice to see a comparison between a well formulated nutrient rich vegan food and equivalent meat based option as I think that might be more persuasive and standardises the control. It also explains how much more scattered the results on the meat based side were. Another confounder could be the fact that one of the study perks was that owners who took part in the study received the pet food for free, an advertised perk of study participation, which could select for people of lower means, meaning it's less likely that the pre-study diet was as high quality. Worth thinking about especially when making recommendations around optimal diet.

This is amazing!! I’ve always had the assumption that vegan dog food was a big no no. I mostly thought it was animal abuse because a lot of the vegan diets I’ve seen being used were always very VERY low on nutrients. I’m glad it turns out that a vegan diet that’s actual formulated vegan dog food and not just “beans and rice” as the you quoted is much healthier!

I'd love to feed my dog vegan food. But he lost too much weight from refusing to eat it any time we tried... He's very picky and refuses almost everything. Been on the same food for 4 years now, and I tried something else during the pandemic because of supply chain issues.... And we had to see the vet for TMI reasons 😢
Edit for clarity: when I say my dog is picky. I mean it. I have tried every possible way that y'all are suggesting. While I appreciate the suggestions, please believe that I have tried. I refuse to have an anorexic dog because of it. It's just not going to happen. Furthermore, I had to stop foods with legumes in them. There is research to suggest that legumes may cause heart issues in dogs. When my dog was on a legume-based food, the vet detected a heart murmur. I refuse to mess with his health. We finally found what works, and we are sticking to it.
Also, please Google DCM. Not all dogs have the same bodily chemistry. Many have developed DCM on a vegan dog food diet

Dogs never decided to be walked with a leash, obey a human's orders, renounce to hunting, exploring and moving around freely outside a human house. Why giving the dog a can of dog food instead of another would be "abuse"?
And let's consider that it is scientifically proven that the vegan dog food makes the dogs even HEALTHIER! Some people just want to blindly defend the norm, no matter if it's wrong.
