I do not know how I never considered the fact that they would fill with rain water. Fascinating.

There is a very useful benefit - it's a warm hat which stacks well for shipping in bulk, and creates a recognizable silhouette for your soldiers in conditions where visibility may be obscured.

I feel like there's a whole genre of videos ofxa British guy in some kind of historical uniform standing in a sunny field and saying "kit" in the first two seconds

That part about having the tip of the hat above the left eye, made me think about the way some militarys were the baret and especially there emblem

In America a unfolded tricorn hat was called a rifleman's hat because that was how the Rifle companies wore it.

Most civilian tricornes were buttoned, not stitched, to allow for the unbuttoning of flaps per utilitarian occasion; full round brim, or simply the back in poor weather to allow for drainage.

Did the tricorner hat have some sort of practical purpose at the time? Or was it just a product of the day's fashion?

It was often worn with the brim down. It was called a Carters' hat. It was worn that way by preachers. The limey 33rd Grunt Regiment folded up the back and sides. Basically, the modern baseball cap.

Brandon F although was about on a later period but close, has a better explanation concerning the use of the tricorne hats especially in the Revolutionary war of the US

I wonder how they came up with those designs. The Bavarian army during the Napoleonic Wars had leather helmets with a huge fur "caterpillar" on top. Whenever it got soaked with rain it got extremely heavy. During the invasion of Russia this was described as especially cumbersome when the water then froze solid.

Imagine being a pasty redcoat in these brutally hot climates before the advent of sunscreen, and the hat they give you doesn’t even cover your face.

I finally found a good thing about the beret, it never got filled up with rain water.

"it doesn't really keep the sun off"
Meanwhile, both people's faces are completely shaded from the sun during the video...

During the French and Indian War, some units cut the hat so it looked almost like a modern baseball cap. They went from red to brown coats and carried a tomahawk as well as a bayonet.

Originally the tricorne was a wide brim round hat with the brim folded with buttons. That way it was more stable in the wind but, if the wearer wanted protection from rain or sun, he could immediately unfold it.

Is that why some of the soldiers in AC3 don’t have the tricorne? They just have what looks like a farmers hat

The Tricourne was the fashion of the time , both military and civilians wore it , so it was economically viable

Also yes , you can open up the hats during sunny weathers , as seen during the American Revolution
