I have cleaned dozens of carbs of varnish and other crud. Carb cleaner spray, a thin copper wire to poke out the holes, and a air compressor to blow out the holes works great. The only carb I could not clean out and make work was a plastic carb on a lawnboy mower. Ugh. When I shut down any engine for the winter, I empty the gas tank and run the engine until it runs out of gas. That way varnish will not accumulate in the carb as the gas evaporates. Big oh yeah, use no alcohol gas in your small engines.

If it doesn't start after you checked like the main 2 things (has gas and can flow to the engine) and does the spark plug spark, then it's always the carb. I just take it apart and soak it in original pinesol for a day, since I don't have an ultra sonic cleaner. Just don't put the plastic float in it. Rinse it all off, spray it down with carb cleaner then assemble. everything be peachy.

I do this ALL the time.
1) Either
2) It doesn't start. Spark plug/ignition.
3) starts n stalls. Fuel issue (95% of the time. Gas is junk. Use marine/aviation fuel & sea foam if stored with gas.)
If 3 then 4) put sea foam in gas. Make sure it gets into carb (loosen float bowl. Wait a day.
5) still won't start, clean float bowl (see 4) and "carb cleaner" jets with straw.
6) really dirty carb. Yank it, pull float bowl, yeet it in sonic cleaner for several cycles till like new. No need to disassemble.
Works 99% of the time.
If Gen runs but no power out... look up "flashing the armature." Ask and I will describe. NEVER RUN A GENERATOR WITHOUT A LOAD!
Have fun... oh and don't use your tong to check for voltage.

Same here. If I have a small engine that will not start, even with good gas and spark, check on price of new carb. Have two year old Echo weedeater that would not start so checked on new carb. $12. No brainer, ordered and installed new carb. Ditto on DeWalt generator. But. . . New carb = $330. No brainer, cleaned old carb three times. Finally got it going.

I'm a little lazier, i start with spraying something into the carb to get it to run. Not a lot but i want to verify it's a fuel issue before i move on. I never bothered with a spark tester, but I should get an inline tester eventually. Not high priority because I've only had that come back and bite me once. A bad spark plug. I could never figure out why that happened on a newish Honda engine that was used.

When it comes to carburetors the best you can do is rebuild or get a new one. Good job.
