As one Italian-American comedian said to his Irish-American comedian friend on a podcast way back - "The mafia, like most organised crime, is just a Gentlemen's Club for Serial Killers".

My Grandfather came from Gangi Sicily and settled in Kansas City, he had 5 sons with my Grandmother whose family came from Naples and was born here in Kansas City, , my Grandmother's family was connected her Cousin was called Jimmy Needles and he was blamed for killing John Lanzia , anyway my Grandfather took his family and moved to Harrisonville Missouri, a small town 45 miles south of Kansas City, back then 45 miles kept his family on the straight and narrow, he was friends with Joe Filardo and all the oldtimers but he kept his family safe and built a great grocery store that we ran until the early 2000s and sold to a big chain , he kept his family safe and honest, he was a great man and was loved by many, I still have people that come up to me and tell me that " if not for your Grandfather we would have gone without food," he would also hold checks for people, he would not cash the check until the people told him that it would clear the bank , in alot of cases he just gave people food, it was in the depression and he never turned people away, he always made sure they had food, he was a great man, and passed away in 1972

I still say Goodfellas is the greatest mafia movie ever made. Not The Godfather. Ray Lotta's best performance of his career and it's not even close. I'd say greatest narration if it wasn't for Shawshank and Casino..I mean between those two movies we could be here all fuckin night!

This is so true until youā€™ve lived the life. It looks fun. It looks cool. But itā€™s really a terrible life. Yes, there are benefits. You donā€™t have any rules. You donā€™t follow the law. No one screws with you. If they do, they donā€™t get away with it. However, youā€™re always looking in your rearview mirror, every time you get out of the car, you donā€™t know if youā€™re gonna get shot or arrested, when you walk out the front door of your house, you have to look around to make sure thereā€™s no one there not being part of the life is so much more relaxing. Also, thereā€™s no retirement plan for the life, no Social Security you have to make a certain amount of money if youā€™re American to collect Social Security. No pension no retirement no medical insurance. The real heroes are the guys that focus on taking care of their families.

People who don't know, do not consider how nerve racking it is, to be surrounded by such paranoid ruthless folks, even if you weren't a legit made man, but see, the dudes who ARE inside don't know any different, they grew UP in this atmosphere, so I think it's very subjective too, some cats are born to be players in this type of world, just like some men take to combat in the service like they were designed for it.. Dudes who are comfortable and keep their heads and genuinely love combat and that kinda adrenaline stuff usually excel and end up in the Teams or something higher , sort of similar to Mafia higher ups and cartel type players seek out not only someone loyal, preferably close (family - wise) but also calm & smooth under pressure, and individuals who are loyal . Having said all this, I kinda agree with the individual in the comments here who sorta poked fun at all the glorifying that gets done, and usually the ones doing that are ones who don't know what's really up. My brother got caught up in the same kinda thing with a motorcycle MC "club" , it was cool in the early days, the guys wanted to ride , party, wrench on bikes, and hang with their brothers, but you get these glory hound cowboys who want to "play bad" because they've seen too many movies, and you soon either find yourself in a boat load of trouble, or six feet under pushing daisies... These type of dudes ruined certain smaller clubs and their reputations, and many good fuckin guys had their lives ruined because of the 1970 Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) or they wound up dead. It ain't all Hollywood and roses, man.

And then, when you go straight your own family disowned you. I was really lucky because my dad taught me from the time I was born not to ask questions and to know as little as possible about what everyone was doing because the more knew the more chance you had of being killed. 30 years later people say oh well what did he say about this or what did he say about that? I didnā€™t ask him, I wouldā€™ve asked them. I just said well. The way I grew up you donā€™t ask questions. you just never ask questions you donā€™t want to know the answers this is the reality of living the lifestyle. Then when I went straight, not only did I not ask questions I didnā€™t want to hear about anything because that was kept me safe.

Having walked upon the hit of Castellano and his bodyguard just seconds after it happened in front of Sparks steakhouse I could still smell the gun smoke the reality of what the mob really is vicious and no one safe.

This is why Goodfellas is such a great movie. The first half glorifies that lifestyle. The second half makes you realize there are only three outs for that lifestyleā€¦death, jail, or witness protection.
