I've had situations where 10+ cars are merging onto the highway at the same time, and I've literally found a gap in the merging cars and almost "merged" into the traffic merging xD

As HGV driver I sometimes slow down a bit to accommodate merging traffic,[ it is mostly impossible with my weight to move back to lane 1 if I go out to lane 2 and everybody speeds up and leaves me no gap to return to my lane] but what makes my life difficult is some 4- 5 cars bumper to bumper attemting same merging manoeuvre into lane 1 before my truck without considering braking distance for everybody.
If everybody merging would leave a bit more space and anticipate all parties' approximate trajectory ( I learnt that in kindergarten with toys 😅) , we all would move with more safety and less emissions and brake dust expenditure

Two simple rules work every time for me. 1) leave enough gap to the vehicle in front on the assumption that there is a HGV in the other lane (either if I am joining or passing a slip road). 2) Merge in turn, so if I am in front they should merge behind, if they are in front I merge behind them.

The power from bikes certainly can make things easier. I wish the van had the same power to weight ratio as the bike 😂

"The law doesn't require me to accommodate you, so I'm not going to do it" is the most frustrating attitude I have observed among U.K. drivers.

If people struggle to let people join it is probably A) poor planning/spacial awareness B) not enough gap to the vehicle in front C) pigheadedness
