Pry bar, shovel, pick axe, swinging axe and a couple hours of work is the answer to stump removal! You gotta a child, nephew or other family member that is having a hard time staying out of trouble, stump removal by hand and hand tools is a perfect project for them!

I have wildland fire fighter training, so I have learned some odd things most people don't think about. Burning out a stump can create a very risky situation with dried/dead roots starting to burn and smoldering for days to weeks. The unseen burning roots can slowly travel a very long distance away from the stump, often completely unseen, and eventually ignite other tree and shrub roots, which can eventually lead to burning fences, structures, etc.. A lightening strike that ignites a tree fire can result in the same problem with underground smoldering roots and a progressive slow wide spread burn. Poison stumps and/or grind them, do not burn stumps unless you plan on keeping a very close eye on a wide area for a potentially long time. A chain saw and a back hoe also work well on dead tree stumps. It takes effort to remove tree stumps. Stay safe!

I had a stump that was about 3’-4’ in diameter, about 6”-8” high. I got some tablets called “stump revenge”. I drilled holes in the stump, dropped a few tablets in each hole. Poured water in and let it go. In a few months time, the stump was so soft I could pull out of ground like a rotted tooth. Cheap, easy

A stump grinder rental at Home Depot is less than $150 for 4 hours. That stump would’ve taken less than an hour. I’d rather rent the tool and not worry about setting a wildfire

A cheaper thing We’ve always done is just drilled a few holes in it, then fill the holes with epsom salt and in the spring time you can go kick the things over! Hope this helps someone

Really stop burning stumps out try this method***drill a few deep holes about ½ wide then get some kerosene.pour into holes and soak... now this is when everyone messes up **DO NOT LIGHT IT on fire* cover with a tarp or plastic and leave it alone come back in 30 days itll be rotted out easy removal

Drill large holes in the stump in various places. Then use ice melting rock salt poured into those holes on all over the top of the stump. Lightly spray with water. This will take a little time, but will destroy the stump from within. I used this once, and it worked!

Hey buddy let me give you another idea I accidentally stumbled upon one year. I had a huge stump that was about 3 ft in diameter sitting next to a septic tank in a very awkward place between the house and the septic tank that you could not drive on. I was goofing around in the backyard and I decided to Varnish a couple of tree stumps and made some seats out of them. I had some leftover varnish and goofing around and I decided to Varnish that tree stump because it was leveled down to the ground and it was a gorgeous piece of wood and like I said I was goofing around wasting the rest of my product. I left it for a whole year that way and the following year the stump rotted completely out, all the way down to the roots that were most likely already rotten. but that year insect took over and an armadillo came up and chewed up that entire stump down to ground level below the grass and we no longer had a stump problem. We even had septic tank repaired and replaced after that shortly and The Roots were completely down to brittle pieces. I was astounded and so was my journeyman plumber husband and a tree trimming company we used to do work around the yard. No armadillos were harmed during this process. Roughly 10$ fix😊

Fire can burn deep in the stump and follow to roots to other locations. You can have a new fire somewhere else if you're not careful. The roots can smolder for weeks.

Just a little added advice with the charcoal. If you clean out all the leftover ash and loose debris then it will burn deeper and much better every time instead of essentially having a blanket that you are trying to burn through.

Be careful .. ruts can go a long way under ground and reemerge causing fire by another structure!!

If you would've had the whole stump. What ive seen on the whole world wide web thing is that you take your chain saw and cut the top like a checkerboard going as deep as you can. Then fill the grooves with EPSOM SALT. Stump will be gone. Refresh EPSOM SALT as needed.

Here’s 1 for ya, whenever my Dad inherited some land, he had a bunch of trees cut out! And to remove some of the leftover stumps he was told to drill 3/4 holes as deep as possible, & then pour buttermilk in! In a few weeks the stumps were almost caving in on their own!!!

I dig a small trench around the stump and get the pressure washer out. Water under pressure removes the dirt around the stump and when you get the dirt out of the way attach a chain to the hitch on the truck. Then jerk it out. Then fill in the hole. Cost a lot less then charcoal.

Drill it with 3/4" or 1" paddle bit. After you drill several holes in it, put rock salt down in the holes. Check it after a month, you should be able to burn it out easily after that

Instead of taking the chance of underground fire 🔥… you can drill 1 inch holes with a paddle bit as deep as you can into the stump and pour salt 🧂 inside of it. It soaks into the veins of the stump down through the roots and dries it out over a few weeks to months depending on it’s size and then it can be easily removed as dried out brittle woo

Shovel, pickaxe, and a sawzall work pretty well too.

Please do not try this. This can start an underground fire and be super dangerous. Not to mention the cost of the charcoal is the same price if not more than grinding it out. If you want to save cost rent a stump grinder and do yours and have a few neighbors go in on it. 👍

In my opinion as a South African that is too good an opportunity to waste. With all that charcoal I would have organised a braai. 😂
