A stage collapsed into a swamp during a thanksgiving celebration (tasyakuran) in Palembang on Saturday (31 May), after the event, which had been approved for traditional dangdut music, instead featured loud remix tracks played by a female DJ.

The incident took place in Jalan H. Umar, Kelurahan 8 Ulu, Jakabaring, Palembang. Video footage of the collapse has since gone viral, showing dozens of guests dancing on a packed stage moments before it gave way beneath them. Screams erupted as the crowd plunged into the murky waters below. The stage had been built over a rawa, or swampy wetland common in the area.

No injuries were reported, but the stage was destroyed and the event was quickly shut down.

Police said the organisers had obtained a permit from the Seberang Ulu I Police Station for a family celebration featuring dangdut music. However, officers were alerted at around 3:00pm that the music had shifted to remix, prompting them to return to the scene.

"Permission was granted for dangdut only. If we had known they would be playing remix music, the permit would not have been issued," said Seberang Ulu I Police Chief AKP Heri. "When our officers visited earlier, they did not detect any violation."

Before police could return to the site to intervene, a second report was received indicating that the stage had collapsed. Authorities are now investigating the incident and have summoned the event organiser and local community leader (RT) for questioning.

The temporary stage, which appeared to lack proper support, was reportedly constructed above a shallow swamp. Police are also reviewing the safety measures taken by the event organisers.
