Although tomorrow is Election Day, we may not have a confirmed winner on election night. But according to Katie Sanders, the Editor-in-chief of PolitiFact, that’s actually pretty normal — and lawful.“States have anywhere from a week to multiple weeks to finish counting their results and declare a winner. Then they can certify their results after that,” Sanders said.“Anything you see on election night is an unofficial result,” shared Sanders. This is important to keep in mind, in case a candidate announces victory prematurely-- as former President Donald Trump did in 2020, mere hours after polls had closed on election night.Sanders explains that different laws for counting mail-in-ballots, as well as really close margins are a couple of reasons why it might take some states a few days to count their results."My advice: stay patient. We want there to be a winner, and it will come, but we want them to get it right," Sanders said.
