In Psalm chapter 12, the poet says that the wicked speak with flattering lips and Beleb val’b, which is difficult to translate, but roughly translates to with a heart and heart. And many English translations render it as double heart. In Hebrew conception, the heart is the seat of the mind. So to be double hearted is to know one thing, but to say another. In this case, they know the truth, but they flatter and lie instead to accomplish their goals. And this is contrasted to God’s words, which are like refined silver. Hence the safety of those who are assaulted by evil speech is not to return evil speech, but confidence in God’s word.
