Wanderlust Chronicles: Being a Pair Figure Skater on a Cruise Ship 5 Secrets About the Mariner’s Past and Present} Performing on a cruise ship is an experience like no other but before I embarked on the ship beyond the ice shows here is the story of the first ship I worked on the Mariner of the Seas which has a story of its own a past filled with groundbreaking innovations hidden technical marvels and time honored maritime traditions

First the Mariner was a record breaker from the start When it set sail in 2003 it was one of the largest cruise ships in the world redefining what was possible at sea It introduced the Royal Promenade a four story boulevard that created a city like experience onboard something that had never been done before

Second beneath its glamorous exterior the ship holds hidden engineering wonders To keep the experience smooth for passengers and performers alike it is equipped with an advanced stabilization system that minimizes swaying making it possible to skate even when the ocean is unpredictable

Third the Mariner pioneered the first full scale ice rink on a cruise ship This revolutionized onboard entertainment allowing professional figure skaters to perform at sea For us adjusting to a moving rink affected by ocean currents is an art in itself every jump spin and landing must be perfectly timed with the motion of the ship

Fourth the Mariner has transformed over time In 2018 a 120 million dollar refurbishment introduced major upgrades including The Perfect Storm water slides redesigned venues and enhanced entertainment spaces proving that even legends must evolve

Finally despite all its innovations the Mariner remains deeply connected to maritime tradition From the captain’s ceremonial bell rings to the long standing Christening ritual these age old customs serve as a reminder that every great ship carries a legacy beyond its modern design
