Honestly, before shipwrecked was released, my go to gear was top hat and dapper vest. Nightmare monsters were legit trouble and you could have 3 terror beaks on you as soon as you hit the threshold.
Had teeth traps, lanturns bugged for infinite light, and enough honey from bee boxes to never starve. And since i was Wilson i always had a meat effegi up to not care about dying so just wore sanity clothes and had boxes full of my normal supplies.

I'm kinda the opposite, like i still use a backpack sometimes but for the most part I wear a log suit with a garland (or top hat if I've killed enough spiders) so I can stay sane

Back when i played DST, i used it to protect my food and other edible things in case i died near some spiders or pigs or whatever.

Me personally I think there should be a extra slot for backpack(I use extraslots mod) because logically saying u wear it on ur back so seemingly there is already space for Armor

Idk, i kind of prefer the backpack prototype when ruins rushing since it keeps your gems safe at the pseudoscience station and you don't need a chest.

I'm still struggling some times in winter leaving my backpack in base and changing armor to sweater I need to protect my pelotas

Just there are situations where backpack is better, and situations where other slots are more useful. Sometimes weapon in hand mag and armor in head, sometimes light like miner hat and insulation in body.
