Istikhara is a way to demonstrate submission to Allah and that you have no power of your own. It involves praying two non-obligatory rak'ahs and then reciting a specific du'a. After performing Istikhara, you should feel guidance from Allah and be inclined to do what is right. You might not see this guidance in a dream or vision, but you will just feel what is right.

The Prophet Muhammad taught that Istikhara is a crucial part of decision-making. He taught the sahaba to perform Istikhara for every matter, not just big decisions.

Istikhara is praying two non-obligatory rak'ahs followed by a specific du'a, seeking Allah's guidance after personal effort and consultation with others. These rak'ahs can be woven into our natural daily sunnah, such as the two rak'ahs before Fajr or after Maghrib, or they can be an additional two rak'ahs.
