A big part of the joy of rogue likes for me is the speed of progression and variety. I get to have a full and complete experience in one sitting instead of needing to throw another 80 hours into a crpg to try a new build

Pure randomness, my friend. The chance to be powerful, the chance to be weak, and the to fail, which in turn makes you grow

You can feel your actual growth when the character doesn't change. It isn't just numbers going up, it's actually you the player becoming "stronger".

I think this genre is comforting to me because change scares me sometimes, the world is a stressful place, and I feel emotional comfort to go into an experience that is something I know very well and understand, rather than something that is an unknown. It’s emotionally comforting

If you think about in a certain way, all games use to basically be rougelike. All arcade games until those games that let you save an account on the machine. Like Gauntlet(not the original). Those NBA games, that Horse racing game. Hell, even most console games until like Zelda.

The ability to find those cracked combos and feel ooh so smug when you pull it off, whether it’s the first or tenth time you’ve done that specific combo, because the randomness ensures that you earned that feeling.

I like rougelikes because it shows how you improve over a period of time

The permadeath aspect of roguelikes was like a gateway for shmups for me, i can blame isaac for being obsessed with bullet hells

For me it's about not doing the handheld path, and rather trying to thrive in whatever the situation throws at you

I’ve tried to get friends into roguelikes but they can’t get past the permadeath and restart stuff. It’s my favorite thing but it’s not for people who can’t be patient with losing a lot

Love the combination of randomness and how many games force you to get better rather than handing you crazy items after you level up that make the game easy. Also easiest genre to pick up and play

Rougelike means the same game but a different game at the same time. The best type of game

I play games in bursts, so it’s nice to be able to sit down and enjoy a full character progression without committing to 20+ hours of gameplay. I’m also not super interested in video game stories so it allows me to get a nearly pure gameplay experience

Its kind of the feeling of competing in some type of ccg where you start w an uncompleted collection and trying to win until you beat some challenges and eventually complete the collection and get better at the game along the way.

Yeah its absolutely about rhat continuous growth and having an environment to challenge yourself. Its not as focused in narrative progression as a genre, but its a chance for mastery

Instant gratification! That's what I think it's about. ;)

You may have to "completely" (but not really - usually) start when you fail, but you get right back into the game and levelling up a new build again super quick!
