Bhushan Gavai Sworn In as India’s 52nd and First Buddhist Chief Justice

In a historic moment for India's judiciary, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) on May 14, 2025. He becomes the first-ever Buddhist to hold the top judicial position in the country. The oath-taking ceremony occurred at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath in Hindi.

Justice Gavai succeeds Justice Sanjiv Khanna and will serve a term of over six months, retiring on November 23, 2025. Known for his strong constitutional values, Justice Gavai has declined any post-retirement government appointments, reinforcing the supremacy of the Constitution in democratic governance.
