I think she knows what needs to be said. She seems to have asked “how” to say it. I say as direct as possible as soon as possible. $35k isn’t chump change. You can let her know you need to keep it at the budget. (Was there a budget set? Was that communicated to her before?) If someone is spending someone else’s money, it’s always okay at any point to step in and protect the budget. You can’t control her response. Only yours. Best of luck!

I think it was rude of the maid of honor not to confirm the budget with them in the first place. Of course, one rudeness doesn't justify another. Maybe offer to help coordinate the expense split? Like say you have a spreadsheet for it and if she sends her the invoices she'll enter them in and send everyone the cost per person. Most people don't like math and will take the help when offered. Or fingers crossed ask for the invoices for "tax purposes".

It’s best to not have unreasonable people as friends! Cut your loses and the friendship and just move on. Unrealistic expectations and people are not something you want to entertain. Reconsider the relationship, be honest if you can and move on. Say, please send us the receipt so that we can pay what is required. Being assertive, honest, is polite and respectful.

That sounds like college tuition money. I’d definitely ask for proof of the charges. She just has to find the right words for it.
