Your children do not have to be your jailors

Shot in Bari, Southern Italy. I was in the region for a week or so, and every night saw children out at all hours and all seemed fine. Admittedly, clement evening weather helped, which not all the world has quite so often. I suppose that this is an 'opinion piece'. It does seem to me that modern parents should be more like their grandparents, and let children roam free more. Would any of my opinions on child-rearing ever survive contact with my actual children? I may never know.

Never thought Lindy would prefer something non-British over something British.

When I was a kid, we always were out late. Mostly because my mom can talk to people for hours about absolutely nothing.

Italian father here: of course, your options get a little limited, but if you don't get totally wasted or throw yourself in a mosh pit with your newborn in your arms, you can pretty easily have a social life.
Also, getting your kid in supervised social situations, with both other kids and adults, is a good growth experience.

I had a trip to Greece a few years back, it was the same way. Very normal for families to take their children out late. Made the public spaces feel very alive and welcoming actually. Very different from the swarms of drunk students one comes to expect here in Canada

It is probably the facilitation of safe car-free spaces, that are also interesting to go out to. That way you won't be scared to death when a child runs around.

It's even better than that.
When in Sicily with our 2yo elder, in a family hotel, he was running from the restaurant to the outside dance floor, to join a group of 6 to 8 yo who welcomed him and danced with him. He did not speak a world of Italian, but they understood each other.
Of course we kept an eye, but he was just safe and joyful all the time.

In the US we don't have open outdoor spaces quite like this. There's always a car rushing by. Let alone the human factors. We deserve these spaces

I'm from Spain. I believe this happens everywhere. Surprised to even think about this not being common anywhere.

They're also very friendly towards kids and families there. I've been to Italy and Spain with small kids and it was really lovely.
Where I live (Finland) lots of people seem to think kids should be allowed in public places only once they become adults. Like seriously "why would you take your kids with you to the grocery shop?" "kids shouldn't be allowed in libraries" "get a babysitter if you wanna eat out at a restaurant" "babies shouldn't be allowed in public transport".
How the hell do they think the kids are supposed to learn how to behave in different situations if they are kept hidden until they're adults??

I sometimes envy southern Europeans their work culture. Longer lunch breaks, maybe a siesta. Late dinners. Where I live everything has to done so damn early

Ever since having a kid I noticed how many people are bothered by children and their noises or quirky foolishness.
Even in the bus you get looks. I've always just thought of kids as little people that can go places.

In some instance, the parents are the kids jailors.

Many of the times that you want to go home yet your mother is busy talking with her friends or relatives of something random lol.

I used to have opinions about kids. Then I had kids and I realise we are all just doing our best...

In western Canada in the winter, hardly anyone goes out that late at night. It's often -20 degrees C.

Now, whether the kids normally get up at the crack of dawn like mine do probably makes a big difference to whether parents do this. There's nothing worse than kids without enough sleep.

I noticed this is more prevalent in countries with a strong siesta culture. When everyone gets and extra half hour sleep during the middle of the day, they're less likely to be exhausted by 10pm.

When they say ‘we haven’t been out for years’ I think they mean doing grown up things like going to a fancy restaurant and a bar, or seeing a horror movie or going to the theatre, going out to a nightclub. I don’t think they’re talking about not being able to sit outside at night.
